On the central route Matala – Heraklion, in the village of Ag.Deka, you will find the archeological site of Gortys. Getting there, the cathedral of St. Titus, the first bishop of Crete, dominated since the 6th ct BC.
Gortys is an important archaeological site. According to Mythology, this is the place where the wedding of Zeus with Princess Europa took place. The ancient city of Gortys flourished during the Minoan period, while during the Roman times, it became the capital of Crete and the North African region, reaching the peak of its acme. It was destroyed by earthquakes twice, the second time completely. Historically the city got the final strike on 828 by Arab invaders.
On its ruins today, the villages of Ag. Deka, Mitropoli and Ampelouzos are built.
